Poppycock and Sunshine

The adventures of a crazy girl trying to live a quiet, slower Provincial lifestyle in an hectic, fast paced, American society.

And the award goes to……. January 28, 2009

I read a lot of different blogs. And occasionally I see that this different blogs have received awards from their admirers. And I think to myself in a very 7 year old sort of way, “that’s neat. Sure wish someone would give me an award for something.”

That day has finally arrived! 🙂

Meet my lovely friend, Pam.

Pam lives in Australia! See, this is the coolest thing about blogging, I would have to say. You meet the most interesting people from all over the world.

I love Pam. She sends me the sweetest little comments and brightens my day on a regular basis.

This is Pam’s Blog.

Pam blogs about all the things I love most. Art (she’s a fabulous artist and has introduced me to the world of textiles and all their beauty.)… nature….. the wonder of life. She has a silly neighbor cat named Dennis (as in “The Menace” 😉 who visits frequently and makes himself at home. I love you, Pam!! Thank you so much for being my sweet friend from across the pond and always stopping in for little visits. And thank you ever so much for this award! Am I allowed to give this award BACK to the person that gifted it to me??? Cause you really really deserve one from me as well!!

The meaning of this award?

“With the Premium Dardos, recognize the values that each blogger shows each day in commitment to transmit cultural values, ethical, literary, personal etc. that, in short, demonstrate their creativity by alive thinking that remains intact from their letters and words.”

This label implies two rules: The first, link the blog from which the award was received. The second rule is to pick blogs to deliver the award to. Now Pam’s instructions were to pass it on to 15 bloggers, but I don’t really have 15 bloggers that I really enjoy THAT much. But I shall pass it on, for I think it lovely. And I shall tell you why I am passing it on!

I wish to bestow this award to the following bloggers, who maintain blogs I love and read on a daily basis……

#1: This is Jen. Jen is my soon to be sister-in-law.

This is Jen’s blog.

Jen blogs about two of the cutest, sweetest little boys you’ll ever meet.

#2: This is Cindy. My soon to be mother-in-law. (That joker on the left is Dennis, Daniel’s dad. Can you see why I love this family so much??)

This is Cindy’s blog.

Cindy has introduced me to quilting. She makes the most beautiful and warm and yummy quilts on the planet. It’s true, Cindy, you do. I cosy up nightly to one of Danny’s that you made him, it permanently resides on my sofa. Quilts are a fabulous art form.

#3: Meet Rhonda Roo, as I love to call her. She’s Cindy’s BFF. I love Rhonda cause she’s a kindred spirit, a nut job like me. 😉

Rhonda’s blog.

#4: This is another woman in my life that I adore and treasure and whose blog I read daily and love love love. Let me introduce you to Daniela.

This is Daniela’s blog.

Dani is not only the sweetest lady you’ll ever meet, but she is incredibly talented with a camera. Her pictures inspire me. So much so that I have asked her if she will take my wedding pictures for me. I thought long and hard about who I wanted and she really was the only one who came to mind. I love you, Dani.

#5: My sweet friend, Brandy has a brilliant blog called “A LIttle Touched”. (As in touched in the head. 😉 Anything and everything you need to know about being self sufficient. There’s a recent blog on how to make your own tofu!!! Yeah, I know, right?

#7: This award goes to lovely Brin and her blog, My Messy, Thrilling Life.

Brin, you’ve make me laugh out loud  and you’ve brought tears to my eyes.

#8: This one goes to Mr. Daniel and his blog, Luchalee. It’s not really a blog so much as it is a life memoir that you get to read online. A memoir that just keeps going. One that you never want to put down. One that makes you really think about your life and what’s really important. Take my advice, start from the beginning. Read slowly. Make sure you have kleenex handy.

#9: Alicia Paulson has the most delightful blog, Posie gets Cozy. She’s terribly talented and creative. She loves all that is old and classic, much like myself. She loves her dog. She loves to sew. She loves to cook. She takes the loveliest pictures.

I have a new favorite show.

I know, right?

I love love love love it. (Did I mention I loved it?)

Thank you, Mz. Cindy for introducing us.

I love the amazing color and life of this show. And the clothes! Don’t even get me started.

It makes me want to sit around all day in heels and an apron, sipping coffee in my old diner mugs and eating pie. Frankly, it inspires me. Is that sad to say? That I receive my inspiration from an TV show??? And this coming from someone who doesn’t even have cable!!!! (iTunes is currently making a FORTUNE off me. Whatever you do, don’t tell Daniel.) I suppose not. I mean, it’s a great story. The cinematography is a work of art really. Art comes in many different forms. Many different vehicles. Right? RIGHT?? *sigh* Well anyways. Love it. I think I love it also because it reminds me very much of my absolute favorite movie.

*sighs* Another brilliant use of color. Not to mention I love that it’s set in Paris. And actually, Montmartre, where it was filmed, was where I stayed when I was there last.

Seriously inspired right now.

I think I shall run out tomorrow and buy lots of paint in lots of pretty colors! And then I shall come home and put on my pretty red heels and old vintage apron and paint my walls all those lovely colors, right after I have come delicious coffee in my vintage diner mugs and eat some pie.

Or maybe not.

Maybe I’ll just get up, sit around in my pretty pink bathrobe, drink coffee out of my vintage diner mugs, and eat oatmeal. Whatever. It’ll be lovely.

And in case your one of those delightful people out there that know and love me, and in case you’re wondering what on earth you are going to get me for my next birthday or christmas or easter or hanukka even though I’m not even remotely jewish by any stretch of the imagination……… I have a HUGE hint for you.

Pushing Daisies on DVD, whichever season you fancy to throw in the cart.

Hint hint. Hint hint.

‘je ne sais quoi’ January 15, 2009

“America is my country, but Paris is my hometown.”  – Gertrude Stein

Yes, tis’ true. I feel most at home in Paris. My second trip there, I returned a new woman. My ideals were changed, realigned, altered. I came home determined to live with more purpose. With more sensuality. Simpler. For a while, I did well. But lately, after stopping and really taking a look at myself and my habits, I find that I have returned to many of the “old” habits. A cluttered life. A rushed life. So, being that this is a the beginning of a new year, no better time like the present to re-discover my “inner French Girl”.

I have been reading this book again……

One thing I have learned from the French, less is more. They don’t impulse buy anything. If they don’t LOVE it, they don’t own it. As I evaluate my closet and collection of clothes and accessories, I realized that I have a LOT of things that I don’t really love. Things that, in actuality, I CAN live without. And really should live without. Getting rid of those things would afford me more breathing room. So today, I decided to begin. To begin the purging process.

I mean really, LOOK at this place!! Total chaos!

How can one even see what one has in this kind of chaos?

Cleaning out one’s closet is refreshing really. Not to mention it’s like opening a treasure chest. I managed to find a few pairs of really cute shoes I had forgotten I’d even owned. A pair of earrings I haven’t even seen since Paris and thought I’d lost. And I managed to purge myself of 2 huge bags full and an entire box full.

The end result?

I found a new use for all the multitude of plastic grocery bags I have laying around the house that I keep saying I’m going to take to recycling. Stuff your purses with them and your once limp and unruly purses stand properly to attention!

All the pretty shoes lined up ready for wear….

Know what that is? An empty drawer! Result of purging!

Now I can rid my boudoir  of this ugly thing, used to house all my scarves.

A girl can never own too many scarves. It is the perfect accessory for any outfit.

Things I LOVE and cannot live without…..

My warm green wool jacket and my bright pink scarf.

My red Danskos. Even though they are looking a little worn.

My old vintage Samsonite carry on….

Which now holds all my girly things like makeup and hair accouterments, and sits nicely on my bathroom counter.

More things I love and find I don’t want to live without……

My new Physician’s Formula eye shadow. It’s department store quality and half the price! Not to mention, a nice variety of colors that compliment my green eyes.

And last but certainly not least…….

My new magazine subscription, thanks to Mz. Cindy. I love love loooooove this mag!

Another thing every proper french girl has in her possession…… proper french cook books. I just received this one in the mail… I’m so excited to crack the pages and try a few of the recipes.

It was written by the woman who also wrote Chocolat, one of my favorite books and movies. Remember that scene in Chocolat when Vianne makes that amazing hot chocolate that looks so incredibly yummy?? I’ve always coveted that recipe. Now, I finally have it!

More to come from my little parisian corner of the world later!!

To Resolve, or Not to Resolve…….. January 12, 2009

“New Year’s Day:  Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions.  Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual.”  ~Mark Twain

Ah the beginning of the year. I love new beginnings. The beginning of a new journal, the beginning of a new Moleskine Planner. It’s a new start, a fresh start. I’ve had many of these fresh starts in my lifetime. So far the beginning of this new year has been eh for me. Let’s recap what’s happened thus far, shall we?

I’ve lost something valuable in my house that I am agonizingly searching for with frantic energy.

This last thursday I was pumping gas for Miz’ Nola at the local Safeway gas station. Slipped on the slippery concrete, tripped over the hose, and came crashing down on my chin, which promptly split wide open and proceeded to bleed everywhere. Which then led to 4 hours in the ER and 5 stitches and a horrid pain in the jaw and lots of Vicadin and having to take 3 days off work. Yeah. Super.

So that’s been my year so far. The beginning of last year? I lost my job of 9 years. Hmmmm. Maybe I’m not so good at beginnings after all. Amidst all the curfuffel, I was wondering if I should attempt to make some New Year’s resolutions, as one typically does this time of year. And then I was thinking perhaps that is just setting oneself up for disappointment. Well anyways. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to has some goals in mind for this coming year. So, after much consideration, here they are. A bit scattered, but resolutions nonetheless. (I must add, all photos of this here post are stolen from flikr.com. I simply entered the resolution in the search field and chose the best ones. It was fun.)

1. BE HEALTHIER …… I really would like to lose some weight. There, I said it. I need to lose some weight. So for starters I am going to take on the Body and Soul Challenge, which I stumbled across at Wholeliving.com. It’s a detox of sorts, which is probably what I need right now. But not the sort of detox where you only eat grapefruit for a week. It’s one that I can handle. You eat food, just the detoxifying sort. Care to join me? I’m starting on monday. We could do it together! Such fun!

2. EXERCISE … JOIN A GYM… which of course means I have to face all my gym phobias. (Perhaps my 2nd resolve should have been to go back to therapy.) But something has to be done. I’m not getting any younger, you know. And I’m certainly not disciplined enough to exercise at home, that we know. Plus I have a crazy friend, Mitch, that goes to the same gym and I know would nag me into going.

3. CREATE A SQUARE FOOT GARDEN. It’s easy. Supposedly. (We shall see. We shall see.) All I know is I wish to grow more than a few cabbages, 4 peas, and 2 zucchini, which is basically all I grew last year. Indeed.

4. DEEEeeeeeeCLUTTER! Oh lordy, do I ever need to. I have a lifetime worth of crap scattered here and there. Every drawer, every closet is bursting with things I don’t use or need it seems. Goodwill, Value Village, EBay, and Craigslist, here we come. A super simplified year awaits me.

I am keeping this list of resolutions short, as you can see. I can only focus on a few things at once. We’ll see how I do. I’m sure you’ll be privy to the updates of all my progress and non-progress. Cheers!

“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in.  A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.”  ~Bill Vaughan

This would be our second New Years’ Eve party in a row. Last year’s theme: 1940’s. This year’s theme: 1980’s.

Last year’s attendance: Roughly 20 or so. This years: a whopping 8. Everyone bailed on us. Whatever. More chocolate and cheesecake for me!

Last year’s party featured jello molds. This year, we rocked a chocolate fountain!!! Yeah, baby!

It was quite the spread, really, thanks to our friends, Nika and Joe.

This would be me and Nika. And yes, she got the memo about the 80’s theme.

Conversation between Mitch and Nika, prior to the party.

Mitch: “So what are you wearing to Faith’s party?”

Nika: “Oh! I got these new Micheal Kors boots! I’m planning on wearing them!”

Mitch, very loudly in his very loud voice that he has, with much inflection: “Micheal Kors is NOT from the 80’s!!!!!”

Nika, also very loudly, with matched inflection: “Micheal Kors is timeless!!!!”

I had to chuckle.

According to Miss Cindy, we are Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman”! Maybe, if I had been able to find those hooker boots like hers. Of course, I could have just borrowed Nikas. *laugh*

Glamour girls.

So Nika used to be a model in the Ukraine. She was teaching me her model pose.

And then I was teaching her mine.

Which apparently, was comical.

The gangsta.

Apparently, I REALLY enjoyed the chocolate fountain. Please note the leftovers in the corner of my mouth. Classsssy.

I have 4 words for you: Jem and the Holograms.

Yes, it was my favorite cartoon. That’s the look I was going for. I even tried to make the gloves, but unfortunately the sewing machine wasn’t working. Damn.

Oh, those silly kids.

Yes, indeed. It was an evening to remember.

Oh, and by the way, HAPPY NEW YEARS to you and yours!!!!
